All Your MOT Questions Answered

How soon can I schedule the test before the MOT expires?

You may get the car tested whenever you like, but if you want to keep the current expiration date, you can come in up to a month, less one day, in advance. The existing certificate will still be valid after doing this, giving you plenty of time to schedule a convenient test time.

Is it still safe to drive my car after the MOT expired?

You may only drive after the MOT has expired if you are going to an appointment-based MOT test or to the repair shop for necessary repairs.

How much time does a MOT take? Could I wait?

A MOT test typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Therefore, it’s essential to give yourself an hour to ensure that your vehicle has had sufficient time to be examined thoroughly and for it to be ready for you to collect afterwards. If we notice a problem or issue with your car during the MOT, we can conduct repairs, but you’ll need to allow more time for the work to be done.

For your convenience, Hammond Automotives offers comfortable seating with tea and coffee facilities.

What’s checked in a MOT?

The MOT test looks at a number of key vehicle components:

  • Tyres, wheels & TPMS
  • Brakes
  • Horn
  • Registration plate
  • Bonnet
  • Mirrors
  • Lights: front, rear, indicators
  • Seats
  • Body/vehicle structure and general items
  • Wipers and washers
  • Steering and suspension
  • Electrical wiring and battery
  • Windscreen
  • Seatbelt system
  • Doors
  • Towbar
  • Boot and tailgate
  • Fuel system
  • Exhaust system
  • Exhaust emissions

What’s the difference between a service and MOT?

The MOT test for your vehicle is a point-by-point inspection intended to determine whether or not your car is safe to drive on public roads. No matter the make or model of your car, the same structural and component portions of your automobile are tested at all MOT testing facilities.

In order to keep drivers, pedestrians, and other users of the road or pavement safe, the MOT test was created in 1960.

A car service, as opposed to a MOT, is primarily intended to maintain the mechanical components of your vehicle and get it working as efficiently as possible. Although it is not required by law, we advise routine maintenance to keep your car in excellent shape and to help protect its value. Maintaining a complete service history is also a smart idea because it increases your chances of selling your car in the future and maintaining its resale value.
