Car Detailing: What It Is and Do I Need it?

A thorough cleaning of your car from top to bottom is called detailing. The process concentrates on both the inside and exterior of your vehicle and seeks to restore the paint finish back to its original factory finish (or as close as is physically possible).

Although there are many servicing levels available, the standard procedure takes care of all the difficult-to-reach areas of your car. Although you can valet your own car, we advise using a professional service to take your auto detailing to the next level. Everything will be cleaned to the highest standard thanks to a professional service.

Interior Detailing

All interior surfaces of the car are vacuumed and cleaned, and an air compressor is often used to remove dust and other debris that has been lodged in nooks and crannies. Scuff marks on doors and vinyl surfaces are removed using brushes and cleansers, and leather or upholstery is also cleaned.

In order to add a sheen and prevent materials from drying out, cracking, or fading in the sun, UV protectvies are frequently sprayed on all surfaces. Typically, carpets are vacuumed and then shampooed. A clean engine makes it easier to find leaks, thus some shops will also offer engine cleaning with their detailing services. This can make engine maintenance simpler.

Exterior Detailing

The goal of exterior detailing is to make your car’s exterior spotless, shining, and new-car-like. Typically, it entails a two-stage washing process where a pre-wash is sprayed to loosen heavy debris and avoid spreading any unnecessary dirt on the clear coat, the second part of the wash is a hand wash using a two bucket technique.

The next part is where you remove the embedded containments like tar or other road substances, often called  “claying”, named so because it often involves using a clay bar and mild lubricant to adhere contaminants from the clear coat of the paint.

After claying the paint, the most common process is polishing the clear coat, clear coat is the protective surface above the actual pigment which gives your car its colour.

The polishing process actually removes layers of the clear coat to smooth out any scratches or imperfections in the paint like marring. This is normally done by a rotary or DA polisher and undertaken in three steps with heavy, medium and light polishes. This part of the process is the most lengthy and can take several hours, if not days.

After polishing, the next step is to protect the paint work and enhance the shine. The most common product is a wax which gives the paint a deep shine and a hydrophobic finish. Most recently there’s been a sudden rise in ceramic and sealant products which are easier to apply then most waxes and most often provide a similar effect.
